The first step toward a healthy recovery when the “unexpected” strikes is establishing a veterinary “home” for your pet. At Bluestar Pet Hospital & Grooming in Jacksonville, Florida, we are privileged to be that partner. Our clinic hours fit into busy schedules and account for the fact that emergencies rarely arise during “standard operating hours.” Furthermore, we are well-equipped to receive client transfers from overnight emergency facilities. Due to our considerable onsite experience and sophisticated diagnostics and critical care services, we are also equipped to resolve even the most complex or challenging cases.
We recommend that clients create a first aid kit for additional peace of mind. This kit should include our number and the number of overnight facilities and poison control. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, for instance, is available 24/7/365. Their number is (888) 426-4435.
Make sure that all family members are aware of these numbers and supplies and that any pet sitters or visitors are also on the same page and know what to do in an urgent situation.
Supplies to add to your kit include:
- Copies of medical records for all pets in the household
- A digital thermometer
- Muzzle (for bite prevention – not appropriate for pets with stomach upset)
- Gauze
- Spare leashes, collars
- Nonstick bandages and self-adhering tape (for bandages)
- Eye droppers or syringes to administer medications or to flush wounds
- Lubricants can protect wounds and eyes
- Products like activated charcoal should only be used when directed by a veterinarian or poison control center to do so (to absorb poisons)
- 3% hydrogen peroxide, again consult with a vet or poison control before administering to induce vomiting of poisonous substances – not for application to wounds!
- Cleansers such as saline solution

Moments often do matter in emergencies; however, it is critical to maintain gentle handling when getting to our clinic in a timely fashion. Even the most easy-going pets can try to scratch or bite when confused or in pain. It may be necessary to use a muzzle to prevent yourself (or a family member) from getting hurt while aiding an injured pet. While your impulse may be to comfort your pet, we certainly understand this; but resist the temptation to get too close to their face. Again, distressed pets can be very unpredictable. Try to stay as calm as possible when transporting your pet. They pick up on your panic, and also panicked driving can present an unsafe situation for your injured or sick pet and anyone else in the car or vehicle.
We appreciate that no one wants to think about those nasty surprises that life sometimes has in store. But, with a little bit of foresight, we can all support the fastest recovery and return to normalcy possible. And that often starts with preventing and controlling those conditions that we can maintain and prevent. So, schedule a visit with one of our veterinarians today.
