Soft tissue surgery is a type of surgery that involves surgery on tissues that are not bone. There are many different types of soft tissue surgeries that can be performed in cats. Apart from a simple routine spay or neuter procedure, the most common soft tissue surgeries in cats are foreign body removal, bladder stone removal, or mass removal.
At Bluestar Pet Hospital & Grooming, our veterinarians are no strangers to these types of surgeries. Cats are notorious for eating things like hair ties and strings! These foreign objects can cause a blockage in the intestines which can lead to tissue death of some of the intestine. During surgery to remove the blockage, the veterinarian may have to do an emergency procedure in removing some of the intestines if any is necrotic (or dead) or the tissue is no longer viable due to a limited blood supply.
Cats, unfortunately, are also frequently diagnosed with bladder stones. Sometimes they can pass them on their own, but sometimes, they require surgery due to their inability to urinate or even rupture (or tear) the bladder if too many stones are present. This surgery is known as a cystotomy and involves cutting into the bladder and removing all the stones that are present.
