Recommendations that you can trust to protect the robust health of your pet

Medications represent just one of many “tools” that Bluestar Pet Hospital & Grooming has at its disposal to protect and support the health of your dog or cat. The medications prescribed or recommended by our veterinarians in Jacksonville, Florida, go hand in hand with an array of preventative services, ranging from a schedule of core and non-core vaccines to procedures such as spaying or neutering. This proactive, routine care allows us to reduce the risks commonly associated with many animal diseases, preventing the development of life-altering and life-threatening conditions.

Additionally, consistent veterinary care supports the prompt resolution of pain and other symptoms and the root cause of those health effects.

During these “well” visits, our veterinarians will prescribe or suggest preventive medications based on factors specific to your dog or cat, such as their age, overall health, and lifestyle. For instance, both dogs and outdoor cats must be protected from diseases that ticks and fleas can spread. Some of these diseases, such as Lyme disease, are zoonotic, meaning they can be spread to humans. So, when you invest in flea and tick control products, you are protecting your pet’s health and your entire household.

Heartworm testing and control are also a critical part of pets’ preventive care. Since mosquitoes spread heartworms, indoor-only cats can also be at risk of developing an infection. Many FDA-approved products are available and are nearly 100% effective at preventing heartworm infections.

As your dogs and cats age, they may require additional preventative medications. For instance, our patients may develop allergies that cause itchy, inflamed skin. We can suggest appropriate medicated shampoos and cleansers and anti-inflammatory medications to soothe irritated, infection-prone skin. If food allergies are to blame, we can also address “triggers” partly by discussing prescription kibble for patients with skin and food sensitivities. Our veterinarians have cultivated a particular interest in nutrition and can recommend supplements to help protect against everything from arthritis to digestive ailments. Some supplements may also aid in fighting the bacteria that erode the teeth and gums and stinky “dog breath.”
