A Guide to Microchips: Keep Your Pet Safe!

In a randomized survey of more than 1,000 pet-owning households, the ASPCA reported that 15% of respondents had lost a dog or cat over five years. Accidents undoubtedly happen. Our pets’ natural curiosity gets the best of them. Fortunately, most of those pets (85%) were reunited with their families. The ASPCA notes that pet tags and microchips contributed to many of these reunions, with one in six dogs being returned due to this identification.

At Bluestar Pet Hospital & Grooming in Jacksonville, Florida, we encourage using both tags and microchips. Unlike tags, microchips “stay put.” They don’t fall off or become unreadable due to wear and tear. The microchipping process provides excellent peace of mind to pet owners.

Get the Chip

Microchips are a tiny form of identification embedded under the pet’s skin. It is safe and does not produce pain. Your pet won’t even know the chip is there! The chip can be scanned by animal control, veterinary clinics, rescues, shelters, and other organizations with the technology to “read” these microscopic identifiers. Once scanned, the number assigned to your pet is transmitted. Each pet’s unique number is then used to track down its owners. It is vital to keep your contact information up to date with the respective registry that manages your pet’s microchip data. Your data is also kept secure, as contact details are only known to the microchip registry.

The chip is no bigger than a grain of rice and can be easily applied between the shoulder blades. This step is seamlessly integrated into your pet’s regular wellness visit. The implantation process is also completely painless. So, numbing anesthetic is not needed. We can complete the placement of the chip in just 10 to 30 seconds.

We consider microchips an excellent complement to our many other preventive services, just like other services available at our clinic to protect your pet’s health and well-being. After all, the sooner we can reunite pets with their people, the less risk of them getting hit by a car or otherwise injured.
