Find a qualified pet dermatologist in St. Johns or Jacksonville, FL

In Florida’s warm and humid climate, pets often suffer from skin issues that cause discomfort and can lead to more serious problems. If you need to find a veterinary dermatologist, the animal skin care clinic at Bluestar Pet Hospital & Grooming is here to help. Our pet dermatology team – Dr. Venkat Gutta and Dr. Sri in St. Johns, and Dr. Amar in Jacksonville, FL – can determine if your pet has a skin allergy, has become infested with fleas or ticks, or is simply reacting to Sunshine State weather.

Food is often the culprit in pet dermatology cases

Many of our pet parents have commented that making changes in their dog’s or cat’s diet resulted in skin problems such as excessive itching and licking. In other instances, overexposure, which is caused by feeding your pet the same food over a long period of time, can cause similar symptoms. If you are concerned that your pet may be having an allergic reaction to food, our veterinary clinic can assist. Allergy testing and an elimination diet helps us determine if there is a particular ingredient causing the reaction. Often, switching your pet to a new food rectifies the issues.

Fleas, ticks, and other outside issues

According to our cat and dog dermatologists, there are a lot of creepy crawlies in the Florida ecosystem that can cause your pet to experience skin issues and discomfort. Our vet dermatologists recommend taking a proactive approach to flea and tick prevention with a monthly pill or topical treatment. Additionally, if you take your pet outdoors in wilderness areas or places with a lot of tall grass, we suggest supplementing their monthly treatment.

Our veterinary skin specialists highly recommend flea and tick sprays be applied to your pet prior to taking them into the woods or environments that may contain fleas, ticks, and other insects. Apply the spray prior to entering the area, and if you will be there for an extended period, reapply in a careful and safe manner.

If your pet becomes infested with fleas, we offer dips and other treatments that are effective in eradicating this type of skin problem. Prevention is a lot easier than treating for fleas, so be sure to take an active protection approach.

I really like these guys, both the doctor(s) and staff. I’ve had silly questions b/c I’m a first-time dog owner, “what do i do if unlikely xyz emergency happens”, and yearly checkups with them including teeth cleaning. They always seem to do a perfect job over the past 3+ years. Thanks!
