Periodontal surgery in cats and dogs is a topic we get asked about often here at Bluestar Pet Hospital & Grooming. Before discussing the surgery options, the first question we are often asked is, “what are the periodontal tissues in my pet?” Periodontal tissues consist of the gum tissue—the gingiva, tooth socket, tissue covering the root, and ligament that attaches the root to the bone.
There are many different periodontal surgeries that can be performed in cats and dogs that all depend on your pet’s individual situation and needs. The most common periodontal surgery in cats and dogs is some type of gingival flap that is often performed when removing a large tooth. A gingival flap is using extra gum tissue to cover a defect (or now open hole where the tooth was).
Other periodontal surgeries in cats and dogs are more advanced but ultimately use the gingival tissues, bone, and sometimes synthetic grafts to fix, correct, or repair the damage.
